David Cote is an immigration and refugee lawyer with over 15 years of domestic and international experience in the field of refugee and immigration law. He has appeared before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, the Federal Court, the Ontario Superior Court and has made written submissions to the Supreme Court of Canada. He comes to our practice after spending a year at the HIV & Aids Legal Clinic (HALCO) as one of two immigration lawyers in that clinic. His practice includes applications for family sponsorships, humanitarian and compassionate applications, appearances before the Immigration and Refugee Board as well as judicial reviews and stay removals before the Federal Court of Canada.
David graduated from the University of Ottawa's National Program with degrees in both Civil Law (LL.L) and Common Law (LL.B) in 2003. He obtained his Master's in Law degree in 2005 at the University of Cape Town with a specialization in criminal justice. After completing his articles with the Crown Attorney's office in Windsor, Ontario, he returned to South Africa and worked at the non-governmental organization Lawyers for Human Rights in Johannesburg. David started as a clinic lawyer in LHR's Detention Monitoring Program and then was appointed as the Program Manager in its Strategic Litigation Program in 2008. David was involved with cases at all level of South African courts including Constitutional Court as well as international forums such as the African Commission of Human and People's Rights. His cases included judicial reviews of asylum applications, habeas corpus applications for migrants in detention, international criminal law, land reform, police searches, health care for migrant children, access to justice and a constitutional challenge to South Africa's immigration detention regime.
